For patients who don't respond well to standard sleep apnea treatments, we offer custom sleep guards.
Snoring may be annoying, especially if you are within earshot, but it might also be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Snoring is simply the result of vocal vibration in the throat as we breathe. Sleep apnea occurs when a person's breathing is temporarily blocked during sleep and may happen hundreds of times per night. This condition increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, daytime tiredness, and other health problems.
How we can help: Even though sleep apnea would not be considered a dental condition, your dentist may be able to help you find relief. The first step will be to participate in a sleep study and get an official diagnosis from a specialist (we will suggest reputable centers). The most common recommendation is a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mask which is the standard therapy for those suffering from sleep apnea. However, many patients find that the device itself is uncomfortable which further interrupts their sleep. If this is the case, your dentist can step in and offer an alternative: a sleep guard. While using a sleep guard, your jaw is positioned slightly forward which in turn prevents the airflow obstruction which causes your sleep apnea. Many people prefer this option finding it allows them to sleep more comfortably.
